3 Simple Things You Can Start Today To Boost Your Mind, Body, and Spirit.

I am always up for a mind, body, spirit boost, aren't you? They are especially good this time of year in upstate New York when our spring weather still includes snow!

1. Meditate

I remember my first experience of trying to meditate. I was in a yoga class and before we started the instructor said we were going to do a meditation. We sat cross-legged on the floor and she told us to take a deep breath and clear our minds of everything. HA! As soon as she said that, I knew I was in trouble. The more I tried to clear my mind, the harder it became. My thoughts went to everything I should have been doing instead of sitting there. I thought to myself, "I am never going to be able to meditate, it's not for me."

Then one day I was on a coaching call with a fabulous woman and when she suggested meditating to me, I told her my past experience and how I didn't think I would ever be able to do it. It was then that she said to me that meditation didn't have to look a certain way.  I could make it anything I wanted to so it would work for me. Honestly, this one statement made such a huge difference for me. She was so right. I realized this goes for pretty much anything. We get so caught up in how society or others tell us things should be, we forget it's really up to us. We can make our own rules, our own everything, so it works best for us!

So your meditation practice can start out very simple. You can sit quietly for as short or as long as you can. Take the time to reflect on your day, what you want it to look like, what you want to do, and who you want to be.  There are also many books and card decks out there with inspiring quotes and mantras that you could choose a different one everyday and focus on that one thing for your day. Find a space in your home you love, get comfy, and meditate your way.  It's as simple as that.

2. Green Juice

I had been hearing about these green juice drinks for quite sometime and had tried making one, but it was very, well, green, and quite frankly not my thing. Then I was fortunate to hear about two women who started a green juice business and they made it super easy to find one that worked for me. It wasn't actually green in color, although it contained a lot of greens, and was soooo good I couldn't get enough of it. It's easy to make, with easy everyday ingredients you can find right at the grocery store or your local farmers market.  It's now a daily drink for me.

The important thing to know here is that I didn't have to run out and buy one of those expensive blenders or juicers. I just use my good old everyday blender and it works just fine. I just make sure to chop up my carrots really small.  I also let my frozen fruit soften just a bit and it works great! Simple Green Smoothies

2 cups fresh spinach                                                  1 banana

1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice                       1/4 cup carrots

1 cup water                                                             2 cups strawberries

1/2 cup blueberries

Blend spinach (tightly packed), orange juice and water together until smooth.

Add carrots, and remaining fruits and blend again.  Use at least one frozen fruit to make the green smoothie cold.

Drink up and enjoy the benefits!

3. Music

Music can do such wonderful things to our spirit. It has the power to lift you up and turn your day around instantly.  I love to have different playlists set up for my different moods, and what I need most on that particular day. I just go to the Spotify App I have on my phone and put together a playlist of upbeat music to get my body and my spirit dancing. Listen while you get ready in the morning, while you exercise, or on your drive to work. Whenever you can! 

Scientists have studied this and show that upbeat music can boost your mood and can lead to a higher quality of life. I also like listening to slower songs that have great inspiring lyrics that lift me up and give me the courage to dream big!

So put on that funky music, get down to the beat, and see your spirit soar!

SLOWING DOWN TO SPEED UP.

Slowing down to speed up is all about slowing down the busyness of your life
and speeding up the quality of it. I see so many people rushing around everyday, running from one thing to the next and their life is just one big blur. When you are rushing to the next moment, how can you possibly be enjoying and living in the moment you are in right now.

The first step is that you have to be willing to make the changes necessary to slow down and eliminate things that are not bringing you joy or adding any quality to your life. Many people say they want things to change but they are just wishing and waiting for things to change. Its going to take work and time, but it is well worth it. So lets do this!!

Secondly, you need to create a plan. This is important because you want to make small changes over time in order to make them stick. You don’t want to say that tomorrow you are going to wake up and change everything because that’s just too much to expect from anyone and you are setting yourself up for failure that way.

This is an example of why many New Years Resolutions don’t succeed. Someone will say that in the New Year I want to lose 20 pounds so January 1st. I am going to eliminate all the bad food I eat and exercise everyday. Then when they can’t keep that up, they get frustrated with themselves and end up just quitting. You need to start eliminating just a couple things at a time. Then you will start to see the results and this will keep you going.

Next, look at what things make up your day that you are doing because you feel you “should” do them. So many of us spend a lot of our valuable time doing things we feel we “should”, but that aren’t adding any joy or value to our lives. You need to start eliminating those, again just one or two at a time. Think of your time as a coin. Do you want other people deciding how you spend your coin, or do you want to decide how you are going to spend it.

Volunteer. One of the best things I ever heard was “when you are feeling helpless, help someone.” So when you are feeling your life is out of your control, help someone who really needs it. This will really show you what you could be doing with your time that could really make a difference, and help you to see how some of the things you are currently doing really don’t serve any purpose.
